the use of Question Word "HOW"

How usually use to asking the condition of someone, the quantity of something, and the manner of something. Let’s see the function this Question Word and the example to using in the conversation.

§      How are you? : the word “How” in this Question usually use to asking the condition of someone who already knowing each other.

Example:

A : Hello Susan, How are you? Nice to see you again.

B: Hi Inge, I’m good. Me too.

§      How do you do? : the word “How” in this Question usually use to asking the condition of someone, when that someone is unfamiliar. Usually in the first meeting.

Example:

A : Hi Anna, this is Mitha.

B : Hi.. How do you do?

C : Hello.. How do you do?

There are two kind of Question Word has same meaning but using to different Question. How Many and How Much.

☛      How Many

How many apples do you have? : in this Question “How many” is same meaning as “How much” but “How many” use to asking the quantity of Countable Noun.

Example:

A : I’m very hungry. Do you have something to eat?

B : Yeah, I have some fruits in the refrigerator.

A : How many kinds of fruits do you have?

B : Just 3, there are Pineapple, Watermelon, and Pear.

☛      How Much

How much does the cost? : “How much” in this question is same meaning as “How Many” but “How Much” only use to asking the quantity of Uncountable Noun.

Example:

A : Here are the ripe ones.

B : How much is this bunch?

A : Two thousand rupiah, madam.

1)    How long did you finish this? : in this question the word “How Long” usually use to asking about long of duration some activity can doing and asking the length of something.

Example:

S: Do you want them custom-made or ready-made?

C: How long must I wait if I want them custom-made?

S: it’s about a week, madam.

2)    How far is your home to your school? : In this question the word “How Far” usually use to asking about distance between one place to another place.

Example:

A : How far is your home to your campus?

B : it’s about 3 Km

A : Not too far
